The Fort Payne City School System has police services and School Resource Officers provided by the Fort Payne Police Department.

New Restorative Juvenile Justice Program

The Fort Payne Police Department has received a grant from Motivational Interviewing, Harvard University and the Department of Justice.  The grant comes in the form of educational programs and was obtain with the assistance of the DeKalb County Juvenile Office and District Attorney Mike O'Dell.  The programs will be used for educational presentations within the Fort Payne High School and they will be used in a program aimed at reducing repeat offenses among juvenile offenders.  The Fort Payne Police Department, SRO's and the DeKalb County Juvenile Office will begin the Restorative Juvenile Justice Program soon and hope to make a huge impact in the lives of the juvenile offenders.

SRO's will participate in Junior Acheivment

The Junior Achievement of North Alabama will be taught again this year and the police department will be involved once again.  The program teaches job skills to the students to better prepare them for the work force they will soon be joining.  The program is taught by community and business members voluntarily.  If you are interested in helping with this program contact Steve Chambers at the Fort Payne High School.

FPMS chosen as a recipient of the Be Safe and Sound in School grant.

The Fort Payne Middle School was chosen June 13, 2008 as a recipient of the 2008-2009 National Crime Prevention Council and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justices Be Safe and Sound in School (B3S) Initiative and grant.  The program will allow the school to join the community, school staff, parents and city officials together in developing security measures for the school.  The grant application was completed and submitted by Sgt. Steven Whited, and the grant installments will be used toward security equipment, that will help increase the safety of the school.  The program is set to start in August.

SRO's, school system partner with the Partnership for a Drug Free DeKalb
The Partnership for a Drug Free DeKalb will be a cosponsor of the school systems new drug prevention program, Too Good for Drugs.  The Partnership is a strong support agency that assist with various programs through out DeKalb County.  Visit the Partnership at: http://www.partnershipdekalb.org/

2nd Annual Predator Awareness Softball Game

On Monday May 19, 2008 adults from the community, school staff and police department battled student athletes from the Fort Payne High School in the 2nd annual charity softball game.  The adult team was victories with an 11 - 9 win over the students.

DARE graduation and field day a SUCCESS!
On April 24, over 200 fifth grade middle school students graduated from the schools DARE program.  Each student walked across the stage and was honored as an individual.  The students were then treated to a annual youth drug and violence free celebration event, in which they played on obstacle courses, slides and several activities that included a dunking booth.  Several parents were on hand to support the event.  We look forward to next years celebration!

New drug prevention program!
SRO's will be making a switch to a researched based drug prevention program that is recognized by the department of education.  Too good for drugs will be the replacement for DARE starting next year!  The program will cover all the topics that DARE covered and will be very benificial and flexable for the class rooms.  The event will be followed by the 2nd annual youth drug and violence free celebration event!

2008 D.A.R.E. Graduation

This year our D.A.R.E. graduation will be held at the Fort Payne Middle School Auditorium.  The ceremony will begin at 9:00 AM, on April 24th 2008.  Each class will be recognized along with each individual student.  We will have special guest speakers from our community and the graduation will be followed by a drug and violence free youth celebration day.  All parents are invited to attend the graduation event!

2nd Annual Predator Awareness Softball Game
Students of the Fort Payne High School's Internet Predator Awareness Team will be playing against members of the police department, school staff and community in this years charity softball game.  Funds raised at this event goes toward funding the programs of IPAT.  Last years game raised around $600.00 that help the group purchase predator and crime awareness shirts for the elementary school grades.  This years game will be played at the Fort Payne Sports Complex and date and time TBA!

SRO receives recognition at BOE meeting

Fort Payne Superintendent Jim Cunningham recently recognized SRO Whited for his service to the school system.  Mr. Cunningham recognized SRO Whited for being the recipient of a national award for exceptional SRO service and for being honored with a National Association of School Resource Officers practitioners certification.  The practitioners certification was awarded for elite service and dedication to his community, school, police department and to the mission of the National Association of School Resource Officers.

NEW patrol car with lots of school spirit!
A new vehicle has joined the force.  Fort Payne now has a 2007 customized Dodge Charger with a HEMI, that also features glow tubes and a Wildcat growl.  The vehicle is loaded with school pride and displays the FPHS Wildcat logo.  They vehicle was provided by the Fort Payne City Council, to Chief Walker to be used as an SRO vehicle.  Councilman Andrew Hairston proposed the idea for the customized vehicle to help promote community and school pride within Fort Payne.  GO WILDCATS!

Fort Payne Police Department and SRO receive National Award.
SRO Steven Whited and the Fort Payne Police Department recently received a national award for exceptional SRO service at the National Association of School Resource Officers Safe Schools Conference in Orlando, Florida on July 26, 2007.

Predator Awareness Softball Game
The students of the FPHS Internet Predator Awareness Team handed a defeat to the police officers,FPHS coaches, principals, teachers and other community members who made up the rival team.  The students proved victorious with a 13 to 12 win on May 31, 2007.  Thanks to all that came and supported the cause.  The game raised over $650.00 and will help fund the teams program for 2007-2008.

PREVENT SCHOOL VIOLENCE
Help, keep our schools safe from violence!  To report information that pertains to school violence, please, call your local Law Enforcement Agency or call The Alabama Safe School Initative (you wont have to give your name) toll free at 1-888-SAV-KIDS (1-800-728-5437).  The Alabama Safe School Initiative is provided by the offices of the Governor and the Attorney General of Alabama.

DARE motorcycle fundraiser show
Motorcycles gathered for a show in beautiful downtown Fort Payne to raise money for the DeKalb County and Fort Payne DARE programs.  The event was held March 30, 2007 at the historic Depot Museum.  The event raised over $600.00 and over 40 motorcycles from Alabama and Georgia entered the event.  Photo's of the event can be viewed in the right hand column.  A special thanks to all that attended.

Breaking the silence about dating violence
Available now!


 Students from the Fort Payne High School have done an excellent job creating and producing a DVD on dating violence.  The students along with former FPHS teacher Mrs. Woods, enlisted the help of DeKalb County D.A.'s office, Domestic Violence shelters, therapist, victims and the Fort Payne Police Department.  The students produced the DVD with the help of DCHS owner and producer Steve Black.  For information on the video or to obtain a copy, contact SRO Steve Whited at swhited@ftpayk12.org.         

 This video has been featured on MIX 102.9 and has recently received recognition from the Alabama State Senate and the Office of Attorney General Troy King.

SRO's help FFA conduct crime prevention program
The Fort Payne and Buckhorn FFA chapters lead by Mr. Blanton held a crime prevention program in November 2006, at the Tractor Supply Company in Fort Payne.  The SRO's assisted the young men and women of the  FFA chapters by providing services to parents and completing child identification kits.

Kindergarten classes visited by SRO's
On January 12, 2007 the kindergaten students invited Officer Whited to be their guest and to speak with them about the duties of a police officer. They had been studying the letter "P" and a book about a police officer. The students also received safety tips on avoiding strangers and staying safe. The kindergaten classes made it a wonderful experiance and were wonderful students.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education
The Fort Payne Police Department offers the D.A.R.E. program at the Fort Payne Middle School.   The program is taught each school year to the 5th grade students.  The curriculum is a 10-week program containing lessons on drug abuse prevention and other helpful topics, and the program ends with a graduation.  Parents can obtain information about the D.A.R.E. program by visiting www.DARE.com.

SRO's and school administration participate in gang training.
Recently Officer Steven Whited, Tip Pack and Superintendent Jim Cunningham participated in a gang awareness training class presented by Northeast Alabama Community College, NACC Instructor Brent Satterfield and Marc Fomby Consulting. The training helps identify gang activity within the community and the school system.

FPHS Internet Predator Awareness Team
The Fort Payne High School has formed an Internet Predator Awareness Team (I.P.A.T.). The team is formed by high school grade students who will present power point presentations to their other classmates and to students at FPMS.  The group is lead by SRO Whited and has received recognition for their efforts of internet safety from local media.  To request a presentation for your school or organization contact Principal Ronnie Crabtree or SRO Whited at the FPHS (256) 845-0535.
